Dame Mary Peters Visit
October 2012

We were delighted to welcome Dame Mary Peters to our school to join in our Olympic Legacy assembly.

Our school has been involved in various Get Set Network projects since becoming the first primary school in Northern Ireland to join the Network. Dame Mary joined us along with Lord Sebastian Coe at the start of Olympic journey back in 2010 and we invited her back as we plan the future of our Olympic journey.

The assembly was organised by a group of very fortunate children who had first hand experience of London 2012. Our school had been selected as one of only 250 schools from across the UK to take part in a Guard of Honour as the athletes paraded from the Village, through the Olympic Park, to the Olympic Stadium for the Opening Ceremony on the 27th July. The eight children and two teachers had an amazing experience.

Dame Mary brought her 1972 Olympic gold medal for the children to see and touch. She also shared lots of interesting stories about all the Olympic Games she has taken part in.

Dame Mary was an Olympic Ambassador for London 2012 and told the children that she was privileged to have been asked by Lord Coe to take part in the “Lighting the Flame” ceremony and select a young athlete from Northern Ireland to actually light one of the cauldrons.
